Humanities – English Language Arts, Social Studies, and World Languages
By studying the world’s languages and cultures, students expand their horizon and prepare themselves for an increasingly multicultural world. At PHS, discovery through the courses we offer helps students open their imaginations to fresh perspectives on the world.
English Language Arts
The Paramus High School English department takes great pride in a rigorous curriculum meticulously aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards for English language arts. Students develop deep critical thinking by navigating a rich balance of classics and contemporary materials. This journey is guided by a dedicated and supportive staff who prioritize both academic excellence and the individual growth of every learner. Throughout the students’ four-year high school career, they are empowered to collaborate and communicate effectively while showing tremendous growth in literacy. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure students graduate with a variety of skills that will support them beyond these experiences in Paramus.
Social Studies
The goal of the Social Studies Department is to help students become effective citizens in a changing world. The program provides students with skills they need to develop as informed citizens to effectively participate in the process of government and the fulfillment of the nation’s promise of a representative democracy. Students will develop an awareness of economic, social, cultural, political, and environmental aspects of nations and people.
World Languages
The World Language program maintains a focus on interdisciplinary learning with students working toward language proficiency. Through the department’s emphasis on interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills, students engage in authentic conversation, explore a variety of cultures in comparison to their own, present information, and develop diverse global perspectives.
